Samuel Hairston played football at the University of Houston and graduated in 2000. He enlisted and reported to Fort Bragg, N.C. in 2003, serving in C co 1/38 LRSC (Long Range Surveillance Company) and was later assigned to A co1/504 PIR 1/82 in August of 2013 after tearing his ACL, and being medically dropped from the Special Forces Qualification Course, serving as the platoon sergeant for 3/A until he was killed.

Sam’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation with two oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, Iraqi Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with two oak leaf clusters and the NATO medal. His qualifications include the Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Military Master Free Fall Parachutist Badge, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Leaders Course and the Basic Parachutist Badge.

He was on his fifth combat deployment, and was killed in action 12 Aug 2014. He is survived by his wife, SSG Tawana Hairston and his son Hayden. He turned 35 in June.
